Singing workshop for the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers

At the invitation of the Pauline Nandoo, Director of the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS), nearly thirty MyCool Singers from the MyCool Music Foundation gathered in the Peckham Park Road Centre, on June 12th 2019 to sing a selection of songs and offer a 'mini singing workshop' with the clients.

It was an emotional experience for singers and clients alike with clients and volunteers at the centre smiling, singing along and demonstratively enjoying the performance.

Feedback received from SDCAS included the real connection felt with MyCool Singers. The song ‘Can't Give Up Now’ evoked a particularly emotional response from some of the clients.  During the mini-workshop clients joined the choir 'on stage'.

In thanking the MyCool Music Foundation for organising the performance, Pauline Nandoo commented on how uplifting it was and how it had provided a 'kick start' to the Refugee Week which followed.

Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers is based in different locations in the borough over three days, and is a non-profit organisation offering a wide range of free services to refugees and asylum seekers.  The aim of the Centre is to relieve poverty and distress through support services, access to mainstream services and the opportunity for its clients to build their own social networks to counter the isolation many refugees and asylum seekers feel.
